What is SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime used for?
It is a multi-purpose primer designed for under-tile applications on porous and dense substrates. It is also used as a primer coat before applying water-based waterproofing membranes such as SikaTile®-110 Secure Proof, and to prevent efflorescence from migrating through concrete, screeds, and renders.
What is efflorescence and how does this primer prevent it?
Efflorescence is the white, chalky salt deposit that appears on the surface of concrete, renders, and masonry when soluble salts migrate to the surface via moisture. SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime uses crystalline technology to reduce substrate porosity and block capillary moisture movement, stopping salts from reaching the surface and causing tile debonding or staining.
Can I use SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime in a tiled pool or spa?
Yes — it is suitable for submerged applications including tiled pools and spas, making it one of the more versatile primers in the Sika tile range.
Do I need to dilute it before use?
No. SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime must not be diluted. It is ready to use straight from the container. Diluting will compromise its crystalline technology and efflorescence inhibiting performance.
How long does it take to cure before I can apply a waterproofing membrane or tile adhesive?
Cure time is 25–40 minutes, depending on climate conditions, substrate porosity, and application technique. Always confirm the primer is fully cured and tack-free before proceeding with the next coat.
What coverage rate should I expect?
Approximately 13m² per litre (~65m² per 5L pail), though this will vary depending on substrate porosity. More porous substrates (e.g. AAC or renders) will absorb more primer and reduce coverage.
Can I use it on steel-trowelled or dense concrete?
Yes — SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime is specifically formulated for both porous and dense/steel-trowelled concrete, which is often too smooth for standard primers to bond effectively.
Is it suitable for early-aged concrete?
It is suitable for early-aged concrete and screeds as a tiling primer only. If you need to waterproof early-aged concrete or screeds, you must use an appropriate Sika moisture barrier as the primer instead. Contact Sika Australia for guidance on the correct product selection.
Can I apply it over existing tiles or waterproofing membranes?
No. SikaTile®-010 Secure Prime is not suitable for use over existing tiles or waterproofing membranes. The substrate must be clean, sound, and free from any existing coatings, curing compounds, or mould release agents.
What temperature range is required for application?
Apply only when temperatures are between 5°C and 35°C. Avoid application in high wind conditions, which can cause flash setting and uneven coverage.
