Trafficable & UV Stable Waterproofing Membranes

Exposed waterproofing areas need a system that is suitable for more than moisture protection alone. ProTrade Warehouse supplies waterproofing membranes and coatings designed for selected external applications where UV exposure, weather and pedestrian traffic need to be considered.

Our range includes products from Sika and Crommelin for applications such as balconies, decks, podiums, terraces, rooftops and other exposed surfaces. The correct product depends on the substrate, exposure conditions, traffic requirements and whether the waterproofing will remain exposed or receive a compatible finished surface.

Waterproofing for Exposed Areas

Trafficable and UV-stable waterproofing systems can be suitable for areas where a conventional under-tile membrane is not appropriate. These applications may include:

  • Balconies and decks: Waterproof exposed outdoor areas subject to weather and regular pedestrian use.
  • Podium decks: Select systems designed for suitable exposed structural and podium applications.
  • Terraces: Waterproof external terraces where the membrane may be exposed to sunlight and changing weather conditions.
  • Rooftops: Suitable waterproofing systems can help protect compatible roof substrates from water ingress and weather exposure.
  • Exterior walls and structures: Selected membranes can be used on suitable vertical and external surfaces depending on the product specification.

Trafficable Waterproofing Systems

Where a waterproofing membrane will be walked on after installation, it is important to select a product specifically designed for trafficable use. Sikafloor 400N Elastic, for example, is a moisture-curing polyurethane membrane described as highly elastic, crack-bridging and trafficable for exposed areas.

Traffic requirements should always be considered when selecting a waterproofing system. A membrane designed for pedestrian traffic should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for vehicles, machinery or other heavier loads.

UV Stable Waterproofing

External waterproofing systems can be exposed to sunlight for extended periods, so UV resistance can be an important consideration where the membrane will remain exposed. Products should be selected according to the manufacturer's stated exposure and UV requirements rather than assuming that every waterproofing membrane is suitable for direct sunlight.

This is particularly important when comparing exposed membranes with under-tile waterproofing products, which are generally designed to be covered by a compatible finished surface rather than left exposed.

Choosing the Right Waterproofing System

Before selecting a product, consider the conditions the finished membrane will need to withstand:

  • Is the area internal or external?
  • Will the membrane be exposed to direct sunlight?
  • Will the finished surface be pedestrian trafficable?
  • Will vehicles or heavier loads be present?
  • What substrate is being waterproofed?
  • Will the membrane remain exposed or be covered with another finish?
  • Does the system need to accommodate movement or crack bridging?

These factors can significantly affect product selection. Always check the manufacturer's technical documentation for the approved substrate, exposure conditions, application method, coverage and traffic limitations.

Surface Preparation Before Waterproofing

A waterproofing membrane needs a suitable substrate to perform as intended. Concrete and other substrates should be sound, clean and properly prepared, with loose material, contaminants and unsuitable existing coatings removed where required.

Cracks, joints, penetrations, edges and other construction details may require additional treatment before the main membrane is applied. Primers or other preparation products may also be required depending on the substrate and selected system.

Build a Complete Exposed Waterproofing System

A complete waterproofing system may include more than the membrane itself. Depending on the application, you may need:

  • Mechanical or chemical surface preparation
  • Suitable primers
  • Joint sealants and detailing products
  • Reinforcement or compatible accessories
  • Waterproofing membrane
  • Additional coats where specified
  • Compatible protective or wearing finishes where required

Always use compatible components and follow the manufacturer's specified system build-up. Do not assume that products from different systems can be combined without confirmation.
