Polyaspartic Floor Coatings
Polyaspartic floor coatings are a popular choice when you need a durable resin floor with faster curing than many traditional epoxy systems. They can be used as part of complete flooring systems or as a protective finishing layer, depending on the product and application.
At ProTrade Warehouse, we supply polyaspartic coatings for residential, commercial and industrial flooring projects, including garage floors, workshops, warehouses and other areas where fast turnaround, durability and UV resistance are important.
Why Choose a Polyaspartic Floor Coating?
Polyaspartic coatings offer several advantages for flooring projects where installation time and long-term surface performance are important.
- Fast curing: Many polyaspartic products cure significantly faster than conventional epoxy systems, helping reduce project downtime when the conditions and system specification allow.
- UV resistance: Polyaspartic coatings can provide good resistance to UV exposure, making them useful for areas exposed to natural light and external applications.
- Durable surface: Polyaspartic coatings can provide a hard-wearing surface suitable for areas exposed to regular foot traffic, vehicles and general use.
- Chemical resistance: Polyaspartic coatings can provide resistance to a range of chemicals and common contaminants.
- Decorative finishes: Polyaspartic systems can be used with decorative flakes and other flooring finishes to create practical and attractive surfaces.
Polyaspartic flooring is particularly popular for garage floors where customers want a durable decorative finish without the longer curing periods associated with some epoxy systems.
A typical decorative garage system can include mechanically prepared concrete, a suitable primer where required, a base coating, decorative flakes and a clear polyaspartic topcoat. The exact build-up depends on the products selected and the condition of the concrete.
For areas requiring additional slip resistance, a suitable anti slip media can also be incorporated into the specified coating system.
Polyaspartic Floor Coating System
A polyaspartic floor should be treated as a complete system rather than simply a single coat of paint. The correct build-up will depend on the substrate, intended use and required finish.
- Prepare the concrete: Mechanically prepare the floor to remove weak surface material, contaminants and unsuitable existing coatings. Diamond grinding is commonly used for suitable concrete substrates.
- Repair the surface: Repair cracks, holes, damaged areas and other defects before coating. The repair material should be compatible with the selected flooring system.
- Prime where required: Depending on the concrete condition and selected system, an appropriate primer may be required to improve adhesion and help address porous substrates.
- Apply the base coat: Apply the specified resin coating at the manufacturer's recommended coverage rate. This may be a polyaspartic base coat or another compatible resin specified for the system.
- Add decorative flakes if required: For a flake floor, broadcast decorative flakes into the wet base coat to achieve the desired coverage and appearance.
- Remove excess flakes: Once the base coat has reached the appropriate stage, remove loose flakes and prepare the surface for the clear topcoat.
- Apply the polyaspartic topcoat: Apply the selected clear polyaspartic coating to encapsulate the decorative finish and provide the required protective surface.
- Allow the system to cure: Follow the product's technical data sheet for recoat times, foot traffic, vehicle traffic and full cure requirements. Cure times vary with temperature, humidity, film thickness and other site conditions.
Polyaspartic Flooring Applications
Polyaspartic coatings can be suitable for a wide range of flooring applications, depending on the individual product specification.
- Garage floors
- Workshops
- Warehouses
- Commercial floors
- Retail and showroom areas
- Residential floors
- Walkways and selected external areas
- Decorative flake flooring systems
Polyaspartic Floor Coatings for Outdoor Areas
One of the advantages of polyaspartic coatings is their resistance to UV exposure compared with many conventional epoxy coatings. This can make them useful for selected external applications such as exposed areas, provided the specific product is approved for outdoor use.
Not every polyaspartic coating is suitable for every external application. When coating driveways, paths or other exposed surfaces, check the manufacturer's technical documentation for suitability, substrate requirements, slip resistance, UV exposure and expected service conditions.
Concrete Preparation for Polyaspartic Coatings
Good surface preparation is critical to the performance of any resin flooring system. Concrete should be sound, clean and suitably prepared before coating.
For larger floors, a concrete floor grinder and dust extractor can be used to mechanically prepare the substrate. Remove dust thoroughly after grinding and address cracks, weak concrete, contamination and other surface defects before applying the coating system.
If you are unsure which system is appropriate, consider the substrate condition, floor area, traffic, exposure and desired finish before selecting individual products.
ProTrade Warehouse supplies polyaspartic floor coating products Australia-wide for residential, commercial and industrial flooring projects. We also stock complementary floor coating accessories and equipment for concrete preparation and coating application.
