Choosing the Right Waterproofing Membrane

Before choosing a membrane, consider whether the application is internal or external, whether it will be exposed to UV, whether the surface will receive pedestrian or other traffic, and what finish will be installed over the waterproofing.

For tiled wet areas, use a membrane designed and approved for under-tile applications. External balconies, patios and exposed surfaces may require a different system with suitable weather and UV resistance. Where the membrane itself will remain exposed or needs to accommodate traffic, select a product specifically designed for those conditions.

Preparing Surfaces for Waterproofing

Good surface preparation is an important part of any waterproofing system. The substrate should be sound, clean and free from contaminants, loose material and other conditions that could affect adhesion. Cracks, holes, movement joints and other defects should be treated according to the requirements of the selected waterproofing system.

Primers, bond breakers, reinforcing tapes, sealants and other accessories may also be required depending on the substrate and application. Always follow the manufacturer's technical documentation for preparation, application thickness, reinforcement, curing and recoat requirements.

Build a Complete Waterproofing System

Waterproofing is often more than simply applying a membrane. A complete system may include:

• Substrate preparation and cleaning
• Suitable primers where required
• Joint treatments and sealants
• Reinforcing tapes or membranes for selected details
• Waterproofing membrane or coating
• Additional coats where specified
• Compatible tile adhesives, screeds or protective finishes where required

Make sure all components are compatible and form part of the specified system. Waterproofing products should not be mixed and matched solely based on similar appearance or application method.
