  • Slip-resistant texture when correctly specified
  • Seamless and easy-to-clean surface
  • Good resistance to abrasion, stains, chemicals and moisture
  • Suitable for residential, commercial and industrial floors

Complete Flake Epoxy Flooring Systems

A typical flake flooring system consists of a prepared concrete substrate, primer, coloured epoxy basecoat, decorative flakes and a clear protective topcoat. The products required will depend on the condition of the concrete, moisture levels, expected traffic and the desired finish.

Steps to Achieve a Successful Flake Flooring System

Correct preparation and application are essential for achieving a durable, professional-looking flake epoxy floor. A typical installation involves the following steps:

  1. Prepare the concrete substrate
Thoroughly prepare the floor by diamond grinding or acid etching. Remove dust, oil, grease, loose material, existing coatings and other contaminants. Check for moisture before coating. Where rising damp or excessive moisture is present, apply a suitable moisture barrier primer before the basecoat. More information on concrete preparation.
  2. Repair cracks and surface imperfections
Repair cracks and defects using a suitable two-pack epoxy filler such as Sikadur 31 CFN. Larger cracks, spalls and damaged areas can be repaired using an Epoxy Coving and Repair Kit. Allow repair materials to fully cure before grinding or coating.
  3. Apply the epoxy primer
Apply the specified epoxy primer evenly and allow it to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. At approximately 20°C, general curing time is a minimum of 8 hours, although actual cure times vary with temperature, humidity and product specifications.
  4. Inspect and prepare the primed surface
Before applying the basecoat, remove any rubbish or imperfections and grind down high sections or patch low areas. This helps prevent unevenness from showing through the finished floor. Follow the manufacturer's recoat window; if the coating has exceeded its maximum recoat time, mechanical abrasion may be required before applying the next coat.
  5. Apply the epoxy basecoat and broadcast flakes
Apply an even coat of the coloured epoxy basecoat and broadcast the epoxy flakes into the wet coating. Spike shoes can be used to walk across the wet coating while broadcasting the flakes. Always follow appropriate safety procedures and the coating manufacturer's application instructions.
  6. Remove loose flakes and apply the clear topcoat
Once the basecoat has cured, remove loose flakes and prepare the surface before applying the clear protective topcoat. Apply the specified number of clear coats at the recommended coverage rate. For floors exposed to heavy solvent, fuel or chemical spillage, a suitable two-pack clear topcoat may be preferred.
  7. Add anti-slip media where required
Where additional slip resistance is required, incorporate suitable aluminium oxide anti-slip media into the clear topcoat. Select the appropriate grade and application rate to achieve the required slip resistance without unnecessarily affecting the appearance of the floor.
  8. Allow the floor to cure before use
Allow the completed coating system to cure fully before returning the floor to service. Light foot traffic may generally be possible after approximately 24 hours, while heavy loads such as cars, boats and trailers should typically be kept off the floor for at least 5 days, or as specified by the coating manufacturer.

Choosing the Right Flake Flooring System

The right system depends on the existing concrete, moisture conditions, required slip resistance, traffic levels and the environment where the floor will be installed. Proper surface preparation and following the manufacturer's application instructions are essential for achieving good adhesion and long-term performance.
