Sika Concrete Repair Mortars & Repair Systems

Repairing damaged concrete requires more than simply filling a crack or patching a damaged area. The right repair system depends on the condition of the concrete, the depth and type of damage, whether reinforcement is exposed, and the performance required from the completed repair.

ProTrade Warehouse supplies a range of Sika concrete repair mortars and complementary repair products for residential, commercial, civil and industrial applications. The range includes cementitious repair mortars, reinforcement corrosion protection products, epoxy repair mortars, bonding agents and specialised repair materials.

How to Choose a Concrete Repair System

A typical concrete repair can involve several stages depending on the condition of the substrate and the type of damage.

  1. Assess the damaged concrete: Identify cracks, spalling, delamination, holes, damaged edges, surface imperfections and areas of deteriorated concrete. The cause and extent of the damage should be understood before selecting the repair material.
  2. Remove unsound concrete: Break back or mechanically remove loose and deteriorated concrete until a sound substrate is reached. Clean the repair area and remove dust, debris, rust and other contaminants.
  3. Prepare exposed reinforcement: Where steel reinforcement has been exposed, remove corrosion and prepare the steel as required. A suitable reinforcement primer or corrosion protection product can then be applied where specified.
  4. Apply a bonding primer where required: Depending on the repair system and substrate condition, a bonding layer may be required between the existing concrete and repair mortar.
  5. Rebuild the damaged section: Select a suitable cementitious or epoxy repair mortar based on the repair depth, location and required performance. Apply the product according to the manufacturer's application requirements.
  6. Finish and protect the repair: Once the repair has been completed, the surface may require finishing, levelling or a compatible protective coating depending on the application.

Cementitious Concrete Repair Mortars

Cementitious repair mortars are commonly used to rebuild and restore damaged concrete. Sika offers different formulations for structural and non-structural repairs, high-build applications, surface levelling, rapid repairs and specialised placement methods.

Products in this range include:

  • Sika MonoTop 352 NFG: R3 lightweight, high-build repair mortar with corrosion inhibitor for suitable concrete repair applications.
  • Sika MonoTop 412 NFG: R4 structural repair mortar with corrosion inhibitor for suitable structural concrete repairs.
  • Sika MonoTop 723 N: R3 pore sealer and levelling mortar for suitable surface preparation and concrete repair applications.
  • Sika MonoTop 612 N: Polymer-modified high-strength, high-build repair mortar.
  • Lanko 136 Rapid Patching Mortar: Rapid-setting repair mortar for suitable high-strength and trafficable repair applications.
  • Sika MonoTop 436 N: R4 high-performance, pourable micro-concrete repair mortar.
  • Sika MonoTop FC: Cementitious fairing coat for suitable off-form concrete imperfections and surface finishing applications.
  • SikaGunite GP: One-component dry-spray repair mortar for suitable gunite and sprayed concrete repair applications.
  • Sika Plug: Fast-setting cementitious water-plugging material for suitable applications.
  • SikaQuick 2500 AU: Rapid-hardening repair mortar for suitable high-strength and trafficable repairs.

The correct repair mortar should be selected according to the repair classification, application method, repair depth, substrate and environmental conditions. Do not assume that all cementitious repair mortars are interchangeable.

Steel Reinforcement Primers & Corrosion Protection

When concrete has deteriorated around reinforcing steel, the repair may require treatment of the exposed reinforcement before the new repair mortar is applied. A suitable reinforcement primer can help protect the steel and form part of the bond between the reinforcement, existing concrete and repair material.

Products in this range include:

  • SikaTop Armatec 110 EpoCem: Bonding primer and reinforcement corrosion protection system.
  • Sika MonoTop 910 N: Cementitious bonding primer and reinforcement corrosion protection product.
  • Sikadur 32 LP: Epoxy bonding agent and reinforcement corrosion protection product for suitable applications.

Where reinforcement is exposed, the correct preparation and protection method should be determined from the specific Sika repair system and the condition of the steel.

Epoxy Repair Mortars & Rigid Bonding

Epoxy repair products are useful where the project requires rigid bonding, high-strength repairs, crack treatment, patching or other applications where a resin-based repair system is appropriate.

Our range includes:

  • Sikadur 31 CF Normal: Two-component thixotropic epoxy adhesive suitable for bonding and repair applications.
  • Sikadur 41 CF Normal: High-strength epoxy resin patching mortar for suitable concrete repair applications.
  • Sikadur 33: High-modulus, high-strength, rapid-curing structural epoxy adhesive.
  • Sikagard 720 EpoCem: Three-part cement and epoxy pore filler and levelling mortar.
  • Sikadur 55 SLV: Low-viscosity, moisture-tolerant epoxy crack-healing and penetrating sealer for suitable applications.
  • Sika Concrete Fix: High-modulus, high-strength, rapid-curing epoxy adhesive.

Cementitious vs Epoxy Concrete Repair

The choice between a cementitious repair mortar and an epoxy repair product depends on the type of repair and the performance required.

  • Cementitious repair mortars: Suitable for rebuilding concrete sections, patching, structural repairs, surface repairs and other applications where a cement-based repair system is specified.
  • Epoxy repair products: Suitable for selected bonding, patching, crack treatment and rigid repair applications where an epoxy-based material is appropriate.
  • Combination systems: Some repairs require multiple products, such as reinforcement corrosion protection followed by a compatible cementitious repair mortar.

The products should be selected as part of the specified repair system. Always check the relevant Sika technical documentation for substrate requirements, application thickness, mixing, curing and compatibility.

Concrete Repairs for Different Applications

Sika repair mortars can be selected for different types of concrete repair depending on the product specification.

  • Spalled concrete: Remove deteriorated concrete and rebuild the affected area with a suitable repair mortar.
  • Structural concrete repairs: Use a repair system specified for the required repair classification and structural application.
  • Surface defects: Use suitable pore fillers, fairing coats or levelling products to correct surface imperfections.
  • Damaged edges and corners: Select a suitable patching or repair mortar according to the repair depth and geometry.
  • Rapid repairs: Where reduced downtime is important, consider repair products specifically formulated for rapid hardening and early return to service.
  • Exposed reinforcement: Include appropriate steel preparation and corrosion protection where required before rebuilding the concrete section.

Concrete Preparation Before Repair

Proper substrate preparation is essential before applying a concrete repair mortar. Loose and deteriorated concrete should be removed, while the remaining substrate should be sound and free from contaminants that could affect the repair.

Depending on the repair, mechanical preparation may include concrete grinding, scabbling, abrasive blasting or other suitable methods. Where larger areas require preparation, our range of floor preparation equipment and accessories can help with suitable concrete surface preparation.

Complete Your Sika Concrete Repair System

Concrete repair projects may require more than a repair mortar. Depending on the application, you may also need reinforcement corrosion protection, bonding primers, crack repair products, levelling materials and a compatible protective coating.

For flooring projects, repaired concrete may also need to be prepared before applying an epoxy or other resin flooring system. See our epoxy floor coatings and Sika range for compatible flooring products and system components.
