Antislip Media And Sand

Antislip Media And Sand

Slips and falls are more common than most people realize, and choosing the right floor treatment can make a huge difference in safety. At ProTrade Warehouse, we stock a range of anti-slip media and sand that can turn ordinary epoxy or polyurethane coatings into a safe, slip-resistant surface.

Whether you’re coating a garage, workshop, or commercial space, using the right anti-slip floor additive is essential to protect people and comply with Australian standards.

Using the right anti-slip media or sand is one way to make floors safer, but for those looking for expert solutions, Stellmann offers high-quality non-slip floor coatings rated from P3 to P5. Suitable for areas from small 5 sqm projects to large commercial spaces, Stellmann’s coatings are designed by specialists in non-slip flooring. How Anti-Slip Additives Work

Most floor coatings cure smooth, which looks great but can be slippery when wet. By adding non-slip media or sand to your coating, you create a textured surface that provides better grip.

To achieve a slip-resistant floor covering using an epoxy or polyurethane product, you will be required to mix the product into the coating product or broadcast anti-slip media over the wet film and lock it in with another coat. You can also use specialty epoxy non slip sand for flooring as anti-slip media.

This simple step makes a big difference in areas exposed to water, oils, or heavy foot traffic.

Slip Ratings and Where They Matter

Floor safety isn’t just common sense — it’s part of the law. The Building Code of Australia (BCA) requires floors, ramps, and stairs in many buildings to meet specific slip-resistance standards. Ratings are measured as P-ratings (P2–P5) or R-ratings (R9–R12):

P2 / R9 Slip Rating

Examples of P2 and R9 slip-resistant floors include:

  • Indoor tiles
  • Shop floors
  • Timber flooring

P2 and R9 floors can be cleaned and vacuumed easily. They are generally recommended for areas such as:

  • Shops in enclosed shopping centres
  • Off-street shops where customers may walk in with wet shoes
  • Supermarkets or areas where liquid spillage is possible
  • Mechanical workshops
  • Warehouses
  • Walkways

P3 / R10 Slip Rating

Examples of P3 and R10 non-slip floors include:

  • Bathroom tiles
  • External tiles and pavers

P3 and R10 floors are slightly harder to mop and are commonly used in:

  • Cafe and dining area floors
  • Supermarkets or areas where liquid spillage is possible
  • Mechanical workshops
  • Warehouses
  • Walkways
  • Flat driveways
  • Patios

P4 / R11 Slip Rating

Examples of P4 and R11 slip-resistant flooring include:

  • Hospital bathroom floor coverings
  • Unsealed brick pavers
  • Stenciled driveways

P4 and R11 floors are harder to mop and commonly used in areas such as:

  • Cafe or restaurant back-of-house areas
  • Loading docks
  • External ramps
  • Steep driveways

P5 / R12 Slip Rating

Examples of P5 and R12 anti-slip flooring include:

  • External shopping center ramps
  • Very rough paving tiles
  • Commercial kitchens exposed to grease

P5 and R12 floors are almost impossible to mop. Cleaning is usually done with a water hose or pressure cleaning equipment. These floors are commonly used in:

  • Industrial kitchens
  • Food processing areas
  • Fuel refineries
  • Butcher shops
  • Pool surrounds
  • Outdoor sloping areas steeper than 1 in 14

Choosing the right rating depends on the location, type of traffic, and maintenance plan.
